The acquisition of Californian company Cypress Grove in the summer of 2010 marked Emmi’s first foray into the goat’s milk product market. Mary Keehn founded the company in the 1980s with nothing more than two dairy goats. The animal remains the focus of Cypress Grove’s business. The company now has more than 1,700 goats, which recently moved into a model dairy.

It all began in the late 1970s, when Mary Keehn bought her first two goats, Esmeralda and Hazel, from a neighbour. She soon began turning the milk she and her children didn’t need into fresh cheese. In 1983, she founded the company Cypress Grove Chevre.

Emmi took over the small but great company in 2010 and helped it achieve renewed growth. To ensure an adequate milk supply amid rising demand, work began in 2011 on a new goat’s milk facility.

 

Animal-friendly husbandry increases milk production

The unique project encompassed the construction of a model milk production facility that also offers training. The focus was on sustainability, and the concept took account of all available information on dairy goat welfare. Consequently, the facility was awarded top marks by the American Humane Association. Since moving into their new home, the some 1,700 goats have been producing not only 70 % more but also more nutritious milk than the average Californian dairy goat herd.
