European plants running on eco-friendly hydropower
We have committed to reducing our global CO2 emissions by 25 %. One of the measures we are taking to reach this goal is making use of low CO2 energy sources. Since early 2017, all our Swiss plants have been running on sustainable hydropower. Sites in Europe will follow them from early 2018. This will reduce our annual CO2 emissions by a further 17,500 tonnes.
Since the start of 2017, all our 36 sites in Switzerland have been running on sustainable hydropower. This is reducing our CO2 emissions by 14,000 tonnes a year.
From the start of 2018, we will be taking this approach one step further by switching all our European sites to sustainable hydropower too, including 11 production facilities in Germany (Gläserne Molkerei in Dechow and Münchehofe), France (ETS Schoepfer in Avignon), Italy (A-27 in Gattico, Italian Fresh Foods in Lasnigo and Rachelli in Pero), the Netherlands (AVH dairy and Bettinehoeve in Etten-Leur), Austria (Emmi Österreich in Nüziders) and Spain (Lácteos de Navarra in Pamplona and Lácteos Caprinos in Campillo de Arenas), as well as all trade and service companies. Together, these sites consume around 35 gigawatt hours of electricity a year. This new measure will reduce our annual CO2 emissions by a further 17,500 tonnes.
In total, Emmi has switched 47 sites to sustainable energy in the space of a year. Together, these sites consume around 148 gigawatt hours of electricity a year. CO2 emission savings for these sites amounts to 31,500 tonnes a year.
BKW is again our partner in this, as it was with the hydropower for our Swiss sites initiative.
